Rongker and Chomangkan Festivals

Monday, April 11, 2016 to Wednesday, April 13, 2016

The Karbis are known for their colourful culture and tradition in Assam. These tribal people living atop Kari Anglong celebrate Rongker and Chomangkan festivals with no less pomp and gaiety transforming the entire hills district into a nest of singing birds. Rongker, the name of the spring festival takes place in April where the indigenous tribe finds it a beautiful occasion to showcase their colourful culture and tradition much to the delight of the foreign and domestic tourists. These hills people observe the annual event without the role of any women to appease the deities to ensure their well being and to keep the impending disasters at bay with bounteous crops.

Another Rongker festival is performed once in a period of five years atop the hills district in a big way. Also known as wofong rongker, it is performed for the well-being of all the villages, where only the village headmen are entitled to represent the people in the two days festival. But the villagers contribute in cash to meet the expenditures. The festival comprises four major parts. Known as Sadi, the process deals with the invitation of the deities. In the next process, the deities are worshipped and the stage is called Karkli. The man-folk gather at a particular spot in the morning where Kurusar performs the puja. In the next stage, the religious specialists predict the future of the village spotting the sacrificed animal. The final stage comprises a feast.

The second day is Rongphu-Rongling-Kangthin, where the evil spirits are driven out from the village by dancing before sacrificing chicken in the name of Ajo-Angtarpi.
This is the concluding part of the festival is Langhe Rongker which is observed on the third day which is performed near a ghat by sacrificing a cock in the name of Arnam-teke. Chomangkan festival is desiccated to the dead. Precisely, it is a four day long death ceremony participated by all Karbi people.
